19th Annual I Have a Dream Scholastic Event Results

Klamath Falls Oregon had a scholastic chess tournament on Jan 20, 2014 at Conger Elementary.
The High School Section of 8 players was won by two with perfect 4-0 scores: Clara Dykstra of Klamath Union and Caleb Carlton also of KU. A clear winner at 5-0 in the 6th-8th Grade Section was Craig Ronne of Henley Jr. High. 18 players in this section. K-5th Grade Section was won by Jarred Degroot Roosevelt Elementary also with a 5-0 score. 58 players in this section. There was an adult section won by Devin Harris at 4-1 in which 6 players took part. Marvin Dykstra directed the event. Local newspaper the Herald and News had a results story with pictures on Jan 21. Presidental Scholastic Results

On Feb 15, 2014 a 5 section scholastic event was held at Olympic View Elementary School, Seattle.
David Hendricks was the tournament Director.
17 players in the K-1 Under 800 rated section were topped by the 5-0 score of Palash Singhal of Creekside Elementary in Issaquah.
18 players in the K-3 Open section were topped by Rockwell Elementary of Redmond student Daniel Shubin with 5-0.
22 players in the 2-3 Under 800 rated sections was also won by a 5-0 score by Asa Whitehead of Leschi Elementary of Seattle.
Two students in the 4-6 under 900 rated section scored 4.5-.5, Ezra Ford of Leschi Elementary and Tate Fuller of Lakeside Middle School of Seattle.
Bear Creek School of Redmond student Asher Thakur scored 4.5 to top the 19 player 4-7 Open section.

A scholastic event on Feb 17, 2014 at Redmond Chess4Life Center was held in 3 sections under the direction of Patrick Pisani.
The K-1 section had 9 players and was won with a 5-0 score by Brandon Jiang of Bellevue Children’s Academy.
17 players in the Grade 2-3 section was topped by Andy Huang of Congar Ridge Elementary in Bellevue with a 4.5-.5 score.
The Grade 4-6 section of 16 players was won by Akshay Bablani of Lakeside Middle School in Seattle with a 4.5-.5 score.

Einsteinwise in Vancouver WA held a 3 section scholastic event on Feb 17, 2014 under the direction of Subhakar Kudva.
The K-3 Under 800 rated section was won by two players with 4-1 scores: Aliya Tang (first place by tie-breaks) of Fisher’s Landing Elementary in Vancouver WA and Joanne Lin of Illahee Elementary in Camas. 8 players in this section.
The K-6 Open section was won by Aaron Probst of our Lady of Laurdes in Vancouver WA with 4.5-.5 score over 14 other players. Aaron now has 220 CRNW rated games played.
The Grades 4-6 under 800 rating section of 10 players was won by two players with 4-1 scores: Akash Prasad (first place by tie-breaks) of Grass Valley Elementary in Camas and Rishi Gorrepati of Illahee Elementary in Camas.

President’s Cup Result

The Washington State President’s Cup took place February 15th and 16th at the Seattle Chess Club. 68 players took part. The event ended in a three way tie for first. Peter Lessler of Seattle , Samuel He of Redmond, WA and Patrick Van Dyke of Maple Valley, WA each ended up with 3.5 points. Samuel He came out on top and took the seed into the 2015 Premier event by coming out on top in a grueling blitz playoff match that went into double overtime. The event was held as a replacement for the Invitational tournament, so more people could watch the State Championship and Premier which was going on at the same time.

International Master John Donaldson of Berkeley California once again had the top score at the Collyer tournament, 4.5-5. But he was not the only one with that score, Paul Bartron of Tacoma and Mark Havrilla of Moscow Idaho also tied for first place. Three players had 4-1 scores: Timothy Moroney of WA, Cameron Leslie of Moscow and Nikolay Bulakh of Spokane.
50 players took part under the direction of Kevin Korsmo of Spokane. Sponsors of the tournament were the Spokane Chess Club and the Gary Younker Foundation. The playing site was St. Anne’s Children Center in downtown Spokane.

Nick Raptis of Portland repeated his win of 2013 to take 1st place in the 2014 Oregon Championship with 7-2 score. 2nd place in the 10 player round robin went to Daniel Gay of Tigard at 6.5-2.5. A former state champion Corey Russell of Medford took third place. Both he and Raptis had 6 points going into the last round. They were paired and Raptis won the game.
Raptis has quite a history in the event. He has won in 2014, 2013,2001 plus a tie for 1st in 2005. He first played in 1992. 2014 was the 17th time for him to play in the annual tournament first held in 1961. Gregori Alpernas was the chief TD for the FIDE and USCF Rated event held at the Portland Chess Club. Jon Fortune and Neil Dale were other TDs helping out.

Conger Elementary School in Klamath Falls, Oregon was the site on Feb 22, 2014 of Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation qualifier tournament. Marvin Dykstra was the tournament director. 20 players took part.

Tai Pruce-Zimmerman of Klamath Falls, an adult played in his first Chess Ratings Northwest event and won the tournament 5-0.

The large chess set has returned to the Westfield Mall in Vancouver Washington. The mall people took the pieces off the board during Christmas time to put a tree display in that area.

When ever I visit the mall I check to see if the pieces are set up right. There are checker pieces also for use on the board.

The Wash. State Championship and Premier were held at the Seattle Chess Club on Feb. 8-9 and 15-17, 2014. There were 10 players in each section, played as a round robin. The winners were:

Championship Section: 1st Nat Koons 5.5, 2nd—4th Daniel He, David Golub and Josh Sinanan 4.5 each, 5th Bryce Tiglon and Ignacio Perez 4.0 each.

Premier Section: 1st Bill Schill 5.0, 2nd Mike MacGregor 4.5, 3rd-4th Satyajit Malugu and Megan Lee 4.0, 5th Dave Rupel and David Bragg 3.0 each.

The TD was Fred Kleist.

Ferndale High School in Ferndale Washington on Feb 22, 2014 was the site of the 17th International Chess Jam under the direction of Randy Kaech.
The K-1 section of 11 players was won by Matthew Sanders of Wade King Elementary in Bellingham.
The 2nd-3rd Grade Section of 31 players was won by Noah Chen of Assumption School in Bellingham.
The 4th-5th Grade Section of 20 players was won by Nathan Chen of Assumption School in Bellingham.
The 6th-12th Grade Section of 34 players had three players tie for 1st place: Dawson Bowhay of Sehome High School in Bellingham, Jude Hoogendyk of Whatcom Middle School in Bellingham and Lucy Sun of Fairhaven Middle School in Bellingham.
104 players played in this event in 2013 while 96 turnout for the 2014 event.

The event was held March 1, 2014 at the club with Jon Fortune as chief TD with assistant TD Neil Dale. As usual Nick Raptis won the event with 4-0. The win added two rating points to both his regular and quick ratings. 22 players took part. The event was held in March but named PCC Feb2014 Game 60 because is was to be held in Feb. but moved to March because of the Oregon Championship change of dates.

No clear winner in the 4 round event. Scoring 3-1 were Jason Cigan, Michael Goffe and Scott Levin.

Portland Chess Shop (CLICK HERE) was the sponsoring affiliate with Galen Pyle handling the TD tasks. Try your hand at G/15 at Coffee Time next month. Events are held the first Saturday of each month and are quick rated by USCF

Becca Lampman a student a Union High School in Vancouver won the event with 3.5-.5 score. 2nd was another Vancouver resident, Sarah May who is home schooled at 3-1. 12 took part under the direction of David Hendricks on March 2, 2014.

The Kindergarten section of 34 players was a 3 way tie at 4.5-.5 for 1st place between: Nathan Race of Coe Elementary in Seattle, Lucas Ng of John Stanford International in Seattle and Tripp Madill of Evergreen School in Shoreline.
The Grade 1-3 Section had 85 players and again a three way tie for 1st but 5-0 scores in this section: Toby Black of Seattle County Day School, Tendo Lumala of Open Window School in Bellevue and Andrew Nguyen of Seattle Country Day School.
Only two 4.5-.5 scores in the 4th and 5th Grade Section of 31 players: Andreas Farny of Leschi Elementary in Seattle and Austin Jradi of Lakeridge Elementary in Mercer Island.
Radin was the TD for this event held on March 1, 2014.

The K-Grade3 section had 9 players and was a three way tie for 1st at 4-1 between Alexander Strigul of German American School in Portland, Tyler Griffith of LaCenter Elementary and Georgly Gidishvili of Orchards Elementary in Vancouver.
A clear winner at 4.5-.5 in the 27 player Grade 4-6 section was Levi Harms of Orchards Elementary in Vancouver.
John Palm was the tournament director for this event held March 1, 2014.

Lots of kids in Richland Washington on March 1, 2014 under the direction of Gregg Delmon Dillingham.
Lots of clear section winners.
Section K-1 under 800 rating was won by Colin Shen of Sacajawea Elementary School in Richland with 4.5-.5 score. 24 players in this section.
Section K-3 Open another 4.5-.5 score won, Patrick Kovels of Christ The King School in Richland. 10 players in this section.
The Grade 2-3 section had 39 players and a clear winner at 5-0,
Bishan Zheng of Lewis & Clark Elementary School in Richland.
26 players in the Grade 4 under 800 rated section and another 5-0 score by Jocelyne Neri of Virgie Robinson Elementary in Pasco.
The Grade 4-6 Open had 27 players and another 5-0 winner, Christopher Rausch of Lewis & Clark Elementary in Richland.
Also a perfect 5-0 score in 41 player Grade 5-6 under 800 rating section by Santos De Lee of John McLoughlin Middle School in Pasco.
Only 11 players in the Grade 7-12 section won by three players with 4-1 scores: Tony Ngo of John McLoughlin Middle School, Elijah Perez of Bethlehem Lutheran School in Kennewick and Marcus Hernandez of John McLoughlin Middle School.
