Jerry Ramey directed a scholastic chess tournament of 5 sections at South Eugene High School on Jan 18, 2014.
Aaron Grabinsky the top rated player in the Elite Eight Section won that section 3.5-5. 14 player Advanced section was won by Sophia Dossin with 5-0. 29 player Intermediate section was won by Kevin Huh also 5-0. Four players topped the 18 player Novice II section, Jj Newman, Arvind Mahadevan, Zach Lathrom and Caroline Foskett with 4-1 scores. The Novice I section of 12 players was won with a 4.5-.5 score by Ian Vo.

Chess4Life Scholastic Chess Event Results

The Chess4Life Bellevue Center held a tournament on January 20, 2014 for kids. The 21 player open section was won by Tarik Kameric with 5-0. 18 players took part in the U800 rated section. The winner, Shakti Senthil also scored 5-0. The U500 rated section was a tie between David Balin and Bharadwa Duggaraju at 4.5-.5. The drew with each other.Lane Van Weerdhuzen was the tournament director.

Winter Chess Fest Scholastic Event Results

Georgi Orlov was the chief director for a large scholastic chess event held January 18, 2014 at Broadview Thompson Elementary School in Seattle. The K-1st Grade section had 55 players and two finished with 5-0 scores: Robert Michailov and George Hurley. 106 players in Grades 2-4 section ended with another two players with 5-0 scores: Nathan Chen and Jackson Boydston. The 5th to 8 grade section with 63 players had a single 5-0 score by Andreas Faray.

Portland Chess Club Jan G/60 Results

Once again the top rated player in the event won. And once again it was Nick Raptis of Portland with a perfect 4-0 score in the Game in 60 d 5 event at the Portland Chess Club. It was held January 25, 2014 with Neil Dale and Jonathan Fortune handling the tournament director tasks for the 30 players who took part. The announced prize fund was based on 20 players but since there were 30 it was increased. Watch for more details in the March issue of NORTHWEST CHESS.

Seattle City Championship Results

27 players in two sections took part in an event held at the Seattle Chess Club on Jan 10-12, 2014.
Fred and Carol Kleist handled the TD tasks.
NM Roland Feng of Seattle with a 4-1 score won the events top section. Brian McLaren of British Columbia was 2nd with 3.5-1.5. He defeated Roland in round 4.
The 12 player lower section had two 3.5-1.5 scores by Man Tran Quang and Arjun Thomas of Shoreline, WA.

NFC Championship Tornado Results

In an event held at the Seattle Chess Club on January 19, 2014 Roland Feng of Seattle was again a winner with a 3.5-.5 score. He drew with third place finisher Viktors Pupols of Kingston in round 2. Vikram Ramasany of Kirkland scored 3-1 to take 2nd place. Fred Kleist of Seattle directed the 11 player event which was dual rated by USCF.

Seattle Chess Club January Friday Results

On the Fridays in January 2014, 26 players in two sections played at the Seattle Chess Club under the direction of Fred and Carol Kleist.
The THAW section was won by Joel Taylor of Kent with 3-1. Three unrated players took part in the NOVICE section. Ajit Kunar scored a perfect 3-0 to top that section.

Washington Junior Open and Reserve Results

Lots of kids played chess on January 20, 2014 under the direction of David Hendricks. Two players topped the Open section with 3.5-.5 scores, Kyle Haining of Lake Forest Park and Derek Zhang of Bellevue. Haining won the G/10 playoff game. The Under 1600 rating section was topped by two 4-0 scores Nate Getz of Bellevue and Revanth Pothukuchi of Bothell. The under K-3 1400 section had one perfect 5-0 score by Gene Yeng of Bellevue . The K-1 under 800 also was won with 5-0 score by Aaron Bogolyubov of Bellevue . The 4-12 under 1400 section had two 4.5-.5 scores by Jared Huang of Shoreline and Justin Chen of Bellevue. Grades 2-3 under 800 section had a perfect 5-0 score by Ethan Saw of Bellevue. Grades 4-6 under 900 rating section also had a 5-0 score by Ashley Mead of Edmonds.

The Tacoma Chess Club held on January 25, 2014 the Northwest Open under the direction of Gary Dorfner. 10 players took part. Paul Barton of Tacoma and H. G. Pitre of Seattle tied for 1st place with 3.5-.5 scores. The event was dual rated by the United States Chess Federation.

The Tis Your Move USCF affiliate sponsored two events in January 2014. On January 19th, 15 players took part in a G/25 d3 event. The winner was Michael Goffe of Portland with a 3-0 score. On January 26 Nick Raptis of Portland won a 14 player G/5 d0 event with a 14-0 score. Sean Tobin handled the TD tasks.

TGIM Jan 2014 Results

The Tis Your Move event TGIM Jan 2014 had 13 players taking part in a tournament held on Mondays 1-6 to 1-27 in Beaverton Oregon. Sean Tobin and Geoffrey Kenway were the Chief TDs. Jerry Sherrad of Portland scored 4-0 to win the event.

2014 Metzger Winter Classic Scholastic Event Results

Tigard Oregon was the site of this event with the sponsoring USCF affiliate being the Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation. Jeff Risher was the Chief TD. A perfect 4-0 score by Corbin Frias of Beaveton won the 16 player USCF rated event Kings section which was dual rated by USCF and Chess Ratings Northwest.
Another 4-0 score won the Rooks Section and that was by Kushal Pai of Portland over 25 other players.
The Bishops A section of 31 players was won by another perfect score, 5-0 by Melissa Phung of Hillsboro.
The Bishops B section of 18 players was a three way tie for 1st at the 4-1 score by William Guo of Portland, Anish Goswami of Wilsonville and Jacob Strayer of Hillsboro.
The Knights A section had 24 players and topped by a 5-0 score by Orie Zadok of Portland. The Knights B Section also finished with a 5-0 score by Linus Hoyt of Portland.
The event was held January 11, 2014

Washington High School Individual Results

Bothell High School was the site for the event directed by David Ellinger. There was a three way tie for first at 4-1 by James Colasurdo of Olympia High School, Michael Wang of Interlake High School in Bellevue and Samir Sen of Skyview High School in Vancouver WA. Your reporter understand there will be a play off later this year for the spot in the Denker High School event at the U.S. Open Florida.
77 players in three sections took part in the event held Jan 31-Feb 1.
There were 22 in the top section. The Premier section of 19 players ended with a 5-0 score by Max Dixon of Roosevelt High School in Seattle. 36 players in the Reserve Section also had a 5-0 perfect score by Jim Kahle of Ferndale High School.

Major Chess Events Coming to St Louis Again

Saint Louis to host 2014 U.S. Championships by Mike Wilmering from MI Newsletter by IM John Donaldson

SAINT LOUIS (January 15, 2014) — The best chess players in the U.S. will gather in Saint Louis once again to fight for the title of U.S. Champion and U.S. Women’s Champion.

For the sixth consecutive year Saint Louis will host the top chess tournaments in the nation.

GM Gata Kamsky will defend his title at the 2014 U.S. Championship while recently anointed Grandmaster Irina Krush will look for her sixth title at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Championship. The events will be held simultaneously May 7 through May 21 at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis (CCSCSL).

The U.S. Junior Closed Championship also will be held in Saint Louis once again from June 20 through July 3. This marks the fifth consecutive year the CCSCSL has hosted the top event in the nation for players under the age of 20.

Tony Rich, executive director of the CCSCSL, said he is excited to continue the long-standing and growing tradition of U.S. Championship chess in Saint Louis.

Since 2009, we’ve worked to raise the prominence and profile of the U.S. Championships, Rich said. We’re honored the U.S. Chess Federation once again awarded these prestigious events to Saint Louis, and we hope our U.S. Champions will continue to serve as role models for young chess players across the country.

These three events are the most prominent invitational tournaments in the nation, and the players will be competing for more than a quarter of a million dollars in prize money.

Prize Fund: $171,000 plus $64K Fischer bonus (breakdown to be published soon)

18 players under the direction of Galen Pyle on Feb 1, 2014 played a G/15 d0 5 round swiss event. Nick Raptis of Portland scored a perfect score to take first place. At 3.5-1.5 in tie for 2nd were Michael Goffe of Portland and Jesse Hutton. The event was quick rated by USCF.

8th Annual Waypoint Foundation Scholastic Results

Tyson Berndt of Quincy Washington won $500.00 for topping the tournament held in Ephrata. Including play off games he scored 7-0. Two boys from Ephrata tied for 2nd, Connor Quist and Timothy Novinsky. 98 players took part. Newspaper coverage in the Columbia Basin Herald and Grant County Journal links to the articles on the Waypoint Website, see below. Event TDs were Roger and Troy Pugh. The event is limited to kids in the Ephrata, Quincy and Soap Lake School Districts.

Marvin Dykstra of Klamath Falls Oregon directed a two section event in K-Falls on Feb 8, 2014. Sorry I don’t have a team standing result yet to report. Two K-Falls high schools, Klamath Union (site of the event) and Eagle Ridge took part in the top section plus Ponderosa Junior High. There was an elementary school section also. Will update this report if I get more info.
